Grade 1    Mrs. Gioe
October 6, 2008

Homework:
Memory Verses: Students will recite 6A on Tuesday, 6B on Thursday, and 6C on Friday.

Reading: New popcorn words: no   there   where   with
Monday: Book 16, Bob at Bat
   Tuesday: Book 17, The Cab
Wednesday: Book 18, Sis the Cat, “Sis and Dad”
Thursday: Book 18, all of Sis the Cat
   Weekend: Book 19, Picnic
Our stories are becoming more difficult. That can sometimes be discouraging to both students and parents. It helps to review some of the previous core books each week. You and your child will be delighted to discover that these “old” books are now quite easy for most of them to read! Books 1 -15 may now remain at home. As you listen to your child, please pay special attention to the vowel sounds. It’s important for the children to discriminate between /a/, /i/, and /o/.

Discovery Sharing: We’re looking forward to seeing everyone’s seed collections this week! I expect that all students will participate in this Discovery Sharing opportunity.

Helpers:     Tuesday, October 7: Jeanne M., Stephanie R.
    Thursday, October 9: Karen B., Jackie K.
Our workshop time is from 10:05 - 11:15. Thanks for volunteering!

Field Trip:   We’ll be going on our trip to Wolcott Orchards rain or shine. I’d like to have all permission slips by tomorrow.

Book It! First graders have the opportunity to participate in this optional reading incentive program. The attached sheet has a parent letter and a reading log for the month of October. Our goal of 345 minutes is based on 15 minutes a day, six days a week. Students may achieve the goal in a variety of ways. You may read to your child; he/she may read to or with someone; independent readers may read by themselves; homework practice counts, also!  Completed reading logs should be returned to me at the beginning of November. A new reading log will then be available.

Church Extension Fund Savings Stamp Program: Last week students brought home information on this program.   It’s a wonderful opportunity for helping your child to learn about Christian stewardship. Please consider having your child participate. Mr. Moore will be in the Learning Center on Monday mornings before the start of the school day for students who wish to purchase savings stamps.
