Have you seen the cards for Emily yet? In last week's memo it was explained that the students at St. Lorenz worked together on a project in honor of their fellow student, Emily Long, and her father, Dan Long. Emily and Dan were killed in a car accident last March on their way to school.
Advent Service on December 10th
Each day, the star dictates a story to me. The student has to come up with a title. Next, the student dictates sentence by sentence his/her story. The rest of the class repeats the sentence. The star decides if the sentence ends with a period or exclamation point. This tells the others if we should read it in our regular voices or with a little extra enthusiasm. After the story is complete, the children read the completed story. During language arts, we circle sight words or the letter we are working on. We also decide if the story is fiction or non-fiction. The next day, the child brings the story back with a drawn picture to illustrate the story. Once again, the children read the story. Wow! Now the star is a great author and illustrator.
Please don't be alarmed if the sentence is not grammatically correct. This is how the student dictated the story.
What are we working on during this time:
1. How to read from right to left
2. Letters make words.
3. The difference between a period and an exclamation point.
4. Sight word recognition.
5 Letter recognition.
6. Fiction or non-fiction
7. Speaking in front of a group
