During the holiday break, our Central and North boys’ basketball teams were combined to compete in a tournament at St. Helen’s in Saginaw. The Spartans defeated St. Stephen fairly easily in the first round, and then won 55-46 over St. Thomas West in the semifinals. However, the final game against Holy Family was a real battle. Down 19-17 at the half, St. Lorenz fought back to take a 4-point lead into the fourth quarter. Holy Family would not give up and hit a 3-point shot at the end of regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime. The teams traded baskets in the first extra period sending the game into double overtime. With less than a half minute remaining, D. Fischer drew a foul and hit both ends of a 1-and-1. After a good defensive stand, the Spartans recovered the ball, and C. List hit a breakaway lay-up to seal the victory 42-38. Z. Scherzer led all scorers with 12 points, and Z. Pendleton and I. Fischer also hit some key shots. Every team member contributed, and it was a great experience for all of them.
