Suggested Spelling Practice
Here is a helpful way to study the spelling suggested by the book. Some students need more practice with their spelling words than other students do. Right now the words may come easily to your child so keep this paper around for when the words get more challenging. Some fun ways to practice words might be with magnetic letters, writing in shaving cream, chalk boards, dry erase boards, letter cards, etc. I would like to stress to do what is best for your child in the time that you have.

During the weekend
Step 1Look at the words.
·        Encourage your child to think of when or where he/she have seen the word before.
·        Suggest that he/she think about what the word means.
Monday Night
Step 2: Say the words.
·        Your child should say the word slowly, listening for sounds in the word.
Tuesday Night
Step 3: Study the letters in the words.
·        Ask your child to point to each letter and say the name to him/herself.
·        Ask your child to think about the sound each letter stands for.
·        Can your child see the shape of the word?
·        Can they count the number of letters in the word?
·        Suggest that he/she cover the word and think of how it looked, and then look at the word again to see if they were right.
Wednesday Night
Step 4: Write the words.
·        Suggest that students say each letter aloud as they write it.
·        Does the word look “right” to them?
·        Are there any letters that might be out of place or missing?
·        Any letters that do not belong?
Thursday Night
Step 5: Check the words.
·         Have your child compare the word they wrote with the correct spelling.
·         Is their word spelled correctly? Ask him/her to circle the incorrect letter or letters.
·         Can your child explain why that part of the word gave them trouble?

If your child spelled the word incorrectly the first time, you may wish to have them follow the steps again.
