Our school family recently received word that one of our former students had been involved in an accident. Brian Schiefer graduated from St. Lorenz School in 1998. After graduation from high school he joined the United States Air Force. During a training exercise last week in California, Brian was involved in a vehicle accident that has left him paralyzed from the waist down. Brian is currently recovering from surgery at a hospital in California. In about two weeks, he will be moved to a rehabilitation center of his choice.

I would encourage you to join our school family in support of Brian and his family (dad-Randy, mom-Nila, sister-Jessica). You can begin by including all of them in your prayers at home with your children if you have not already done so. We are also encouraging our students to consider preparing Brian a card, letter, or poem that the school will be collecting and sending to him. Starting today, we are also making U.S. lapel flags in honor of his service to our country, available to our entire school family who choose to give a donation to Brian and his family. All donations will be given to the family for any financial needs that they will experience over the next several months including large traveling expenses back and forth from Michigan to the hospital. The lapel pins will be available for a minimum $1.00 donation from your child’s homeroom teacher as well as the school office. We are asking the students to wear those pins every day next week as a sign of our support for Brian. We intend to send him pictures of our students with the pins on.

Do you have items in your house which you are not using? Would you like to donate these items to St. Lorenz? Just drop off your item at the Church office and fill out a form stating your name and what the item is. Project 12 Baskets will list these items on eBay or other auction sites. St. Lorenz receives close to 70% of the net proceeds and you will be sent a receipt following the sale of the tax deductible item. We have had everything donated from dishes, books, records, movies, cameras, printers, and TV’s to a couch, hutch, rocker, nordic track, organ and an amigo. Why not get rid of some of those items taking up space in your home and give them to your church? For more information, contact Chris Maurer at 652-6142 ext 157 or go to their website at www.project12baskets.com.

Is it November already? It hardly seems like it should be that far into the start of the year already. The start of November is my time for preparing for Thanksgiving. If I am very organized and ahead of the game, I am already planning for what will be served over the holidays while everyone is home. In today’s economy, pre-planning is very necessary. At the cost of foodstuffs and entertaining supplies, it pays to budget and plan ahead! As I stand in the aisle in the grocery store, I am often forced to consider buying the generic or only planning my meals with the items that are on sale. Some of the items that we look at cause us to exclaim “What a high price!” It is a good thing that I do not have a big family! What might it cost me to buy enough for a large group?

That brings me to thoughts of another high price...the one that Jesus paid for each of us. Even billions of dollars could not come close to the price that Jesus paid for our sins. Furthermore, Jesus did not pay this price with money. He paid it with His life. He gave His life so that we might live. No other “currency” could have paid this price. In 1 Peter 1: 18&19 we are reminded that “it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed...but with the precious blood of Christ...”

We might all be able to think of the most expensive, most precious, most valuable gift that we were given…maybe for a birthday or Christmas present. None of these things can compare with the gift of forgiven sins and eternal life that Christ has given us through His death and resurrection! As Thanksgiving approaches, let’s give thanks for this gift and also take every opportunity we have to share the good news of this gift with others!

The students at St. Lorenz have been working on a project in honor of their fellow student, Emily Long, and her father, Dan Long. Emily and Dan died in a car accident last March. Monies from this project will go towards memorials for the Long family including the lilac bush that the students planted in Dan and Emily’s honor, and donations to the Student Aid Fund and the CAN (Child Abuse and Neglect) Council of Saginaw.

At the end of last school year, each child created a piece of artwork that could be made into a card. These cards are in the process of being printed and will be for sale starting November 10. You can purchase the cards in bundles of ten for $20.00.   Each bundle will include a variety of cards. Cards are for sale at the Early Childhood Center Reception Desk between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

If you would like to purchase cards with just your child’s artwork on them, an order form is included with this Memo. Additional order forms are available at the Early Childhood Reception Desk. To view your child’s artwork in advance, stop by the reception desk. If you desire, it is possible to have your child create new artwork that can be made into cards. Art paper and instructions are also available at the reception desk. Creating Christmas cards could be a possibility. Orders will be taken until November 21. Cards will be delivered by Dec. 15.

Please call Dora Hyslop, Lindsey Hessler, or Lynn Zeddies for additional information. We appreciate your support in this project and for the Long family.
